Metal Canvas Art and “Ashita no Joe”

“Ashita no Joe” began serialization in the January 1, 1968, issue of “Weekly Shonen Magazine,” and is a boxing manga by Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba that has sold over 20 million copies in total. Centered on Joe Yabuki and his fated rival, Toru Rikiishi, the series depicts the lives of men who stake their very existence on boxing.

The first TV anime series was produced in 1970, followed by the sequel *Ashita no Joe 2* in 1980 and a theatrical film in 1981. Osamu Dezaki’s bold compositions, direction that made masterful use of light and shadow, and avant-garde visual expressions—such as the “harmony-style” artwork reminiscent of gekiga and traditional painting—further deepened the world of the series. This traveling exhibition reimagines those expressions in three dimensions as metal canvas art.
