Details of the “Twelve Kingdoms” POP-UP STORE

“The Shore of the Underworld” (Shincho Bunko), the first new volume in seven years of Fumimi Ono’s fantasy series “Twelve Kingdoms,” on September 17, 2026.

To commemorate this, “The Twelve Kingdoms” pop-up stores, where fans can purchase merchandise, are currently being held at bookstores nationwide. The Maruzen Junkudo Bookstore Group will host these events at four locations—Maruzen Marunouchi Main Store, MARUZEN & Junkudo Sapporo Store, Maruzen Okayama Symphony Building Store, and Junkudo Fukuoka Store—for a limited time from September 17 to October 14, 2026.

The “Twelve Kingdoms” POP-UP STORE has different run dates at each bookstore. It has already started early at Ogaki Bookstore’s Aeon Mall KYOTO branch, three Sanseido Bookstore locations, Shosen Book Tower, and Kinokuniya Bookstore’s Yokohama branch have already kicked off the event on September 1. The Maruzen Junkudo Bookstore Group and Kinokuniya Bookstore’s Shinjuku Main Store will begin their events on September 17, coinciding with the release date of the new book *The Shore of the Underworld*.

According to Shinchosha, this pop-up store marks the first opportunity nationwide to purchase merchandise that was newly released at the “Twelve Kingdoms” Akihiro Yamada Original Art Exhibition held at the Himeji Museum of Literature in 2025.

Maruzen Junkudo Bookstore Exclusive Original Merchandise Now Available!

Maruzen Junkudo Bookstore will offer original items available exclusively at their locations.

A total of four items will be available: a “large handkerchief” featuring cover art by Akihiro Yamada, “printed cookies (12-pack)” with character designs, the “Jetstream Lite” multifunctional ballpoint pen, and an “original shopping bag” perfect for taking home!

Receive a venue-exclusive “Puffy Sticker”

At each POP UP STORE location, customers who purchase “The Twelve Kingdoms” merchandise totaling 3,300 yen or more (tax included) will receive one puffy sticker featuring a design exclusive to that POP UP STORE venue.

The designs differ from the bonuses offered at the “Twelve Kingdoms” New Release Countdown Fair currently being held at bookstores nationwide. Please note that this offer ends when supplies run out; one sticker is distributed per transaction, and books are not eligible. On sale starting at 12:00 a.m. on September 17 at “magmabooks” in Toranomon, Tokyo

“magmabooks” (Toranomon, Tokyo), operated by Maruzen Junkudo Bookstore, will will sell the new release *The Shore of the Underworld* from 12:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. on September 17, 2026. It will also be available for purchase during regular business hours starting at 11:00 a.m. “Twelve Kingdoms” merchandise will also be available for purchase in-store starting at 12:00 a.m. on September 17.

The only entrance is the main entrance on the 2nd floor; the 3rd-floor entrance will be closed. Out of consideration for the neighborhood, customers are asked to arrive after 11:40 PM on the day of the event. Payment will be cashless only, and the store may impose a purchase limit of “one book per person” at its discretion on the day of the event. Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line The last train from “Toranomon Hills” Station departs at 12:23 a.m. toward Nakameguro and at 11:59 p.m. toward Kita-Senju, so please check your return transportation options as well.

“Lounge Access Plan” – Buy and Read Immediately “In-Store Stay Plan”

A special plan is available that allows you to use the in-store lounge “magmalounge” at a discounted rate until 5:00 AM on September 17. Private seating is 4,000 yen (tax included), and standard seating (semi-private or open seating) are 3,000 yen (tax included); both plans include one copy of *The Shore of the Underworld* and lounge access until 5:00 AM. Additionally, a plan allowing you to stay among the bookshelves on the second floor until morning is available for 2,000 yen (tax included)! You can bring your own picnic blanket or a simple folding chair to read.

All plans require advance reservations, which must be made by September 14 at the magmabooks store or by phone (03-6273-3873) by September 14. The lounge offers free Wi-Fi, free drinks, and free snacks, with a total of 33 seats: 6 private seats and 27 standard seats. There are no restrooms inside the store or in the lounge, and “restroom break” times—during which staff will escort guests to the restroom outside the store—will be held approximately twice at 2:00 a.m. and 4: 00, when staff will guide guests to restrooms outside the store. According to the official announcement as of September 10, the private and semi-private booths are fully booked, and only open seating is available.

About the New Release “The Shore of the Underworld,” the First in Seven Years

*The Shore of the Underworld* is an original short story collection—the first new installment in seven years from the *Twelve Kingdoms* series, which has sold over 14 million copies cumulatively. It includes four stories that confront the nature of life and question the meaning of existence, including the title story, “The Shore of the Underworld,” and “The Stranger.” It will be released nationwide (excluding some regions) by Shincho Bunko on September 17, 2026, with a list price of 825 yen (tax included).

All original cover art and illustrations created specifically for *The Shore of the Underworld* will be unveiled for the first time, and numerous related illustrations—including those from *The Silver Ruins: The Moon of Black*—will also be on display. In addition, a special exhibition of costumes and props is planned to commemorate the Blu-ray release of the Toho musical *The Twelve Kingdoms: Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadows*.
