Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Synopsis and Teaser PV

Thanks to the Three Gospels brought from beyond the solar system, humanity has achieved unprecedented prosperity and expanded its reach throughout the entire solar system. These three blessings are gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and “Materialize”—the technology to materialize images.

The interstellar craft that brought these objects went haywire less than 10 years after its discovery, giving rise to an aggressive self-replicating system. People likened this unknown ecosystem to the Apocalypse. After three months of fierce fighting, the front lines reached a stalemate in satellite orbit, and humanity was forced to abandon Earth. This year was recorded as Year A.A. (After Apocalypse).

In A.A. 45, children born on the Moon and in the colonies had come to live with the Apocalypse as a part of their daily lives. On the Moon, a young boy named Azumi Rei awoke.

Interview with Director Kenji Kamiyama on Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO

An interview with Director Kenji Kamiyama, conducted at SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con) . It includes content published by AUTOMATON on September 2 and by Gizmodo (io9) on August 13.

Director Kamiyama describes this work as a story of the struggle for survival on Earth against an interstellar craft that has arrived from beyond the solar system —a battle for the right to survive on Earth—as well as a story of the inner struggles and personal growth of a boy and a girl unfolding against that backdrop.

Reflecting on the *Gundam* series, he recalls that it was the first anime in the history of Japanese animation to deliberately portray an ordinary boy as the protagonist, noting that since he was the same age as the protagonist when the series premiered, he saw himself in the character. “The original *Gundam* is a milestone for me,” he states.

He received the proposal for the project about five years ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it took some time to get started due to overlapping commitments with other directing projects, he accepted the role because he was drawn to the opportunity to create an original series with a fundamental setting different from anything he had done before.

A Unique Timeline and the Protagonist’s Name

This work features a timeline unique to the series. Regarding the decision to name the protagonist “Ray,” Director Kamiyama explained, explained that even though the story takes place in a new timeline, he wanted viewers to intuitively understand that he is the protagonist without the need for complex explanations. The decision to feature a character clad in red stems from the same reason—the intention is for viewers to intuitively grasp what the color red signifies within the Gundam series.

Shared Worldview with the Game

Regarding the collaboration with the game “GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT,” the game side initially proposed a setting where giant mechs resembling space monsters battle Gundams, The anime team then established the nature of the enemy and the structure of the war taking place in this world to build the story, and based on that, the game team constructed the setting 100 years in the future.

Profile of Director Kenji Kamiyama

Born in Saitama Prefecture in 1966. He is a film director, screenwriter, and animation director. He served as director and series composer for the TV anime series “Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C.” (2002–2005). Subsequently, he co-directed the full 3DCG anime “ULTRAMAN” (2019) and “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045” (2020). After directing *The Lord of the Rings: The Battle of Rohan* (2024), which was released in theaters worldwide, he served as chief director for *Star Wars: Visions Volume 3* (2026), a series based on the *Star Wars: Visions* episode “The Ninth Jedi” (2021).
