The New Cast of *Kochikame*
Four actors have been announced. Given that these are roles that have long been beloved by fans, each cast member expresses their deep attachment to the characters in their comments.
| Character Name | Cast |
|---|---|
| Kankichi Ryotsu | Fukushi Ochiai |
| Keiichi Nakagawa | Shota Aoi |
| Reiko Akimoto | M·A· O |
| Daijiro Ohara | Yorimitsu Sakamoto |
Fukushi Ochiai as Kankichi Ryotsu
Fukushi Ochiai has revealed that “Kochikame” was the first manga he ever read as a child. Since he also watched the anime, he says his heart was filled with joy—the happiness of being able to breathe within the world of the series—when he received the call informing him he had passed the audition. He describes the series as having a nostalgic feel, yet featuring bright and energetic content.
Keiichi Nakagawa, voiced by Shota Aoi
Shota Aoi noted that there were moments when he couldn’t hide his surprise, but he also described the production process as a time spent with the cast bringing to life characters from the anime he watched as a child. He highlights how the comedy from that era translates to the present day as a key point of interest.
Reiko Akimoto, played by M·A·O
M·A·O says she has been familiar with both the original manga and the anime since she was a child, so she was truly delighted when she heard the results of the audition. She describes the series as a work where viewers can enjoy a lively, slapstick comedy set against the backdrop of a traditional downtown neighborhood, featuring a host of unique characters.
Daijiro Ohara, played by Yorimitsu Sakamoto
Yorimitsu Sakamoto reflects that his mind was completely consumed by the challenge of how to convey elements such as Department Head Ohara’s dignity, presence, kindness, and melancholy. He noted that while the department head is in his mid-50s, he felt this was different—in a positive way—from how people in their 50s are today, and ultimately decided to rely on the sense of immediacy created by filming alongside the rest of the cast. He also expressed his hope that the series will have a long run, just like the Heisei version.
Comments from the Original Author and Director of the New “Kochikame”
Original author Osamu Akimoto has praised the series, noting that while the artwork has evolved to suit modern tastes, the visuals remain as impactful and entertaining as ever. He said that hearing the voices of Ryotsu, Nakagawa, Reiko, and the department heads made him feel as though the lively police box crew had returned, which brought him great joy.
Director Heitaro Daichi stated that he was honored to be chosen to direct a work so widely loved in both its original form and as an anime, adding that he has come to appreciate the series’ appeal anew as production has progressed. The series features many gags with a strong Showa-era flavor, and he says the entire staff is enjoying the production process with the mindset of, “Just leave that part to us.”
